Re: Discussion of Operational Limitations of Ford V10 Engine
There is much truth in the service desk reply! Mileage can be improved, but its not for the faint of heart. You need to tune the AFR (air fuel ratio) to the engine load. Lean cruise is in the range of 2,000 to 3,000 rpm on a more or less level highway. Tuning the AFR to 15.4:1 and dialing in 40 to 4...

Re: Discussion of Operational Limitations of Ford V10 Engine
Steve and Perleys, the 5 Star Tuning is a software modification of the Ford Factory EEC computer which controls all of the engine operating functions including throttle, fuel delivery (Air Fuel Ratio), ignition timing as well as a number of transmission functions. The software "tune" is lo...

Discussion of Operational Limitations of Ford V10 Engines
Gentlemen, I post infrequently in this Forum because my interests are generally more technical and focus of Coach modifications, both powertrain and motorhome interior functionality. Also, I am the owner of a 37 year old edition of the Born Free 24ft. President Rear Bath model and couldn't be happie...

Re: How many of you wish your Born Free had an Electric Step
Michal9651, I have continued to restore, upgrade and modify my 1982 Dual Fuel Born Free 24Ft Rear Bath unit. I have found virtual no interest on this forum for the older Born Free units, so I have stopped posting any details here. I'll PM you separately to initiate some possible exchanges of informa...

Re: How many of you wish your Born Free had an Electric Step
Interesting! My 1982 Born Free 24RB has a vacuum operated step. Step is retracted with the engine on and extended with engine off. Still functioning perfectly. Original component manufacturer long gone, but very simple mechanism. The vacuum motor still available in industrial applications.

Re: Unorthodox solar panel install - 24 ft. RB
Stan, I agree on the adequacy of 200 watts. As I indicated, my very much older BF has an auxiliary battery, same size as the starting battery mounted under the hood. I use a 12v deep cycle Interstate battery in this location. That deep cycle 12V is wired in parallel with the two 6V 105 Trojans for m...

Re: Unorthodox solar panel install - 24 ft. RB
I have been following this thread and thought I'd offer a few comments about my solution, as this is an unusual DIY topic for this board. In my case, I have a 1982 Born Free 24 ft. Rear Bath model. I had upgraded the power panel to the current Progressive Dynamics system but felt the single auxiliar...

Brochure 1989 Born Free
I had hoped there would be more contributions on "Older Born Free Brochures" in this thread, but the influx seems to have slowed. Here is a copy of the 1989 Brochure. Hopefully others will scan and upload earlier material.

After due consideration, I'm going to up the ante by mounting 2-100 watt panels, running 10 gauge wire with MC4 connectors from panels to controller, with a Sunsaver PWM controller, 4 gauge wire to an 12V 8D battery in a vented poly case. This should give an auxiliary level of 290 A-H and an inadequ...

Well, it seemed to me to be a very useful discussion about the real technical requirements to realize the full potential (no pun intended) of solar panel installs and the lifetime of the wet flooded deep cycle batteries - a critical component of the issue. The cited claim of 14.8V vs. 14.4V charge d...

My comment about 3-stage converter/chargers was triggered by the 14.8 bulk charge voltage recommendation. Most 3-stage chargers with which I am familiar are limited to a max of 14.4 volts. Further, this is often in the short pulse desulfanation cycle. I am not yet aware of how to increase the maximu...

Interesting reading! The comments about wire size between controller and battery, location of the solar controller, voltage levels and the preference for flooded cell batteries all make good sense. This has made me consider adding a second panel and upgrading the solar controller to 10 amps. In my o...

At this point the drain down cutoff point is hard to monitor. In the 11.2V case I cited, there was a 255 ma. current drain in coach from the Magellan GPS system I installed. I had foolishly assumed that the off switch switched the thing off! When the BF is in storage, I have no power input for the b...
