WB radio runs down battery

Post by stevek »

Weather Band on my Jensen radio comes on automatically with Weather Alerts and has run down my engine battery. Not sure if it turns itself off?
Happens when my BF is in storage. Anything I can do about this?
Anyway I can disable the WB?
Thanks..

The radio always runs down the battery when stored. I use a simple battery disconnect switch.
You can find one at Amazon: http://goo.gl/HVhnz2 shortened link.

I do not recommend the screw off type battery disconect. I had one fail on my tow car, a Ford Focus, and caused starting issues. Suggest that you utilize the knife type disconnect switch such as this one, http://www.amazon.com/WirthCo-20108-Bat ... ect+switch. Only problem with it is that it takes up more space. If you do a google search you will find a lot of references from RV technicians about problems with the screw type battery disconnect.

I'd either pull the fuse for that radio if it's a once in a while thing, or put a simple switch in the power lead to the radio.

When I winterize, I reposition the fuse under the water heater outside cover, so I can't accidentally power the water heater up before I put water back into it. Pull the fuse out, and put it back so it is engaged in only one side, the other side is sticking out in air. No power to energize and no lost fuse.

An alternative is to use a battery maintainer.
