help with camping locations

Post by jerseypete »

My wife and I are going to Skokie Il to attend a wedding on Sept 25th. Its about a 13 hour drive for us to get there. am hoping to get help with a campground nearby, or parking in the area. I cannot find one. All suggestions and ideas will be appreciated.

Pete, do you belong to any fraternal organizations (Moose, Elk, VFW, American Legion, or Freemasonry?) Many will frequently allow members to overnight in their parking lots if you ask, and if they don't have the ability for you to do that, often other local members may be able to help you out with parking at their homes or businesses or at least point you to a location you wouldn't have otherwise known about.

I've actually stayed at a Post Office back parking area on RAGBRAI because our local postmaster knew another postmaster... sometimes you just have to be creative.

I've found that kind of travel to be a pleasant alternative to campgrounds, Wal-Marts, and Cracker Barrels and it's great fun meeting new people as well.

You're welcome. Check with the wedding party as well. Perhaps either the wedding venue or the reception venue may have a parking lot that you can stay in for a night or two. County fairgrounds often have campsites with hook-ups, and some cities have parks with a few RV sites as well. Those don't usually show up in campground directories though.

Just be creative. Someone will know of a good place for you to go.

jerseypete,

I don't know how close you need to be to Skokie. There is a campground for military vets at the Great Lakes Naval Campground, about 30 miles north of Skokie. Here is a link to the web site for the campground:

Hope this helps.

Dear Joe and Lucinda THANK YOU!!!!!!!
I just booked 3 days at the Great Lakes Naval Cmp grd
Military price !8 a night. Looks great! Right on Lake Michigan. I did my Naval Tr there in '59.
Many amenities offered. Dump and water fill up at the Marina, no biggie.
Electric onsite.
