Traveling to Canada

Have your Motorhome Insurance Company issue a "Canada Non-Resident Inter-Province Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card". They should sent it to you via e-mail in a pdf file.

Generator Problem, Power Guard

Steve, On some older Born Free units, there is a "Power Guard". The "Power Guard" is a Supplementary Generator Overcurrent Potector made by Todd Engineering Inc.. It should be located in 4' square junction box below the Magnatek unit. The center red button is your reset. I hope t...

RV Insurance

When we had a mouse enter and damage our gen-set, we received an estimate of over $800 to repair it. The repair shop asked who was our insurance company. When we said GMAC, he said that you in luck because they will cover your repair less the deductable. His previous customer had Progressive and the...

Caulking your BF

George Boley has the right idea. Wetting your finger is important. First spray the fresh bead of RTV with windshield washer fluid than use your finger to push the silicon into the opening you want to fill. Wipe it clean so that only a fine bead line is showing. You can also use a paper towel to clea...

Compartment Door Water Leaks

Mel you are correct. I had some rusty locks. I purchased some "O" rings from Home Depot at 10/$1.97 and use them to seal the locks. The "O" rings are by Danco in the plumbing department. They size #17, 1 1/6" OD x 7/8" ID x 3/32" Dia.

Skid Wheels

I grease mine once a year whenever I take my unit out from storage in the Spring. I grease it enough so that the grease comes out of the bearing surface and wipe up the excess. I does tend to collect dust but only on the outside and not on the bearing surface. We still have our original skid wheels....

Compartment Door Water Leaks

Attached is a sketch of how we fixed our compartment door water leaks.
Practice your skills on the inside first before you attempt the outside RTV bead. You will have a nice looking bead and it will keep the water out of your compartment.

How to dry laundry?

Attached are photos of an idea that Dick Dittmer showed me years ago. It consists of 1/2" pvc that can be taken apart and stored in a bag. Cement the 90 elbows on one side only and hand fit the other end. Add the 1/4" nylon line and you can attach it to the ladder. Easy to carry, easy to i...

Using Oil

You may be experiencing what Bill Lyons did on his unit. He replaced the PCV valve and his oil usage was stopped. The PCV valves usually cost less than $10 at a Ford Dealership plus labor for installation. I would recommend that you stay with the manual spec's on oil. Using a lighter grade would not...

Valvac Morror

Jack, I think that you are correct. I was able to tap it back in with a 2 pound rubber mallet. If it comes loose again, I will use the epoxy that was recommended by Velvac. It is not loose now, it took a little bit of force to get it back into place. All the electrical controls do work, so it did no...

Velvac Mirror

I talked to the chief engineer at Velvac and he said that he has never seen a problem like mine. The componets are press fit under 4000# of force. He suggested that I apply some two part epoxy and tap it together. That is eaiser said than done. I did not see the gap until I wash the unit after I too...

Velvac Mirror

The Velvac mirror arm is made of three pieces. I have developed a 0.175" gap between the pivot and the horizontal arm. How can it be repaired or can it be repaired?

Smoke Detector

We relocated our smoke detector to the new location that the newer Born Free's are now using. Take a look at the newer units and just simply move the unit. You can brush the old location on the ceiling and the depressions will go away. It has worked great for us.
