2008 PASO ROBLES CALIFORNIA RALLY
April 11 - 14, 2008
Hosts: Robert and Carol Newby & Jim and Ramona Hofmann

The South Western Area Rally was held at the Wine Country RV Resort April 11th to 14th in Paso Robles, California. There were 23 coaches with 41 people in attendance.

The Rally Opening Ceremonies were held on Friday afternoon. Each attendee introduced themselves so that they could be welcomed by everyone. Bill and Rosella Meier of Kearney, Nebraska received a 2008 Campground Directory for coming the greatest distance and also for being the first to sign up for the rally! Our thanks go to Ray and Mary Hansen of Kirkland, Washington for the Campground Directory. We look forward to having the Meier's back next April. First time rally attendees were Claudia Jones of Verdi, Nevada; Fred and Sandy Boswell of Pioneer, California and brand new members John and Donna Rennick of Los Altos, California. After our meeting time we had some fellowship time, followed by a Pizza feast. After Pizza, Bill and Rosella Meier volunteered to be the Marshalls for the 'Bean Bag' tournament to be held after dinner on Saturday and Sunday.

Each morning we had goodies, cereal, bananas, juice, toasted bagels etc. to go with our coffee in the club house.

On Saturday, during fellowship time, we discussed what types of rallies we wanted for the future. It was the consensus that Rallies could be 5 days in length because of the distances that some may have to come due to the size of our area. It was felt that we should hold 2 rallies a year being April and October. The April rally should be held in the Central Coastal area of California and the October Rally held in other parts of our area. A 'moving rally' for September/October 2009 going around the 4 Corners area of our SW Area will be investigated. An Alaska Caravan will also be investigated for 2009.

Gil Valles, Born Free factory representative, brought 2 new 2008 Born Free coaches to the Rally for everyone to inspect and consider as a replacement for their coach. One was the new 22 foot with Cab Over Bed , and the other was the 32 foot coach. Gil was an important part of our Rally and he made sure that if anyone had any coach problems that they were addressed and fixed . Gil also 'chauffeured' many of the attendees to wineries and other points of interest in the area. We all appreciate Gil's help.

One of the highlights of the 'after dinner time' on Saturday and Sunday was the Bean Bag Tournament. We had 14 teams competing while the rest cheered them on. Saturday was the elimination time and Sunday was the semi-finals and finals. Wouldn't you know it, the newest members and first time attendies John and Donna Rennick were the Grand Champions and received an 'Emergency Kit' to carry in their Born Free.

Several went to the Estrella War Bird museum at the Paso Robles Airport. Norm Bild had the surprise of his life when he saw an ex-Navy airplane there that he had not only worked on while he was in the Navy, but had flown many times as a Navy Pilot. The plane went from the Navy to the Forest service to be used for fire use, and now is at the museum.

Our next rally is planned for the last week in September 2008 to be held near Hume Lake in the 'Sierras' in California. Joan Ledbetter and her sister Erlaine Gregory will make the arrangements, and we will put out the details when they become available. Because of the size of the campground, attendance will have to be limited.

Thanks go to our co-hosts Jim and Ramona Hofmann along with Bob and Carol Newby for a great rally.
