VERMONT FOLIAGE RALLY: September 29 – October 3, 2011
Hosts: Ron & Bobbie Warmbier and George & Sue Boley

To celebrate the glorious change of seasons in Vermont, twenty-one Born Free rigs converged for this Vermont Foliage Rally of 2011, including five first-time Born Free couples. On the first day, our gracious hosts gathered us for a getting-to-know-you wine social and pot luck suppa (Vermont-speak).

Early Friday, we climbed aboard our all-day bus tour – first stop, Hope Cemetery. What, a cemetery? Yes indeed, and a beautiful sight. Established in 1895, it showcases magnificent granite memorials, artistic as well as whimsical, carved by expert stonecutters who had migrated from Italy and Scotland to settle in this region.

Source of this flawless rock was at our next stop, in Graniteville, Vermont at the Rock of Ages Center. A fascinating guided tour of this geological phenomenon featured the century-old active quarry (featured in Star Trek) with natural granite being drilled, blasted and extracted from the 600 feet deep hole. Winding up an exciting morning, our bus drove us to Stowe, Vermont where we were treated to a lavish luncheon at the charming Trapp Family Lodge (Sound of Music fame).

Our Saturday bus trip took us to the renowned Shelburne Museum where we spent the day. Shelburne spreads over many acres, its several galleries and 25 historical structures housing first rate collections of fine and folk art as well as a private railcar, splendid firearms gallery and the spectacular steamboat “Ticonderogaâ€
