2012 Florida RV SuperShow Rally Recap

Hosts: Sue and Eric Sandstrom

We took over the TA Travel Plaza on I-4 exit 10 gathering for the Florida RV SuperShow Rally. It was a beautiful sunny day in the high 70’s. At ten o’clock we did caravan over to the staging area where we waited for the officials to check us in. Our sites couldn’t have been better. Very short walking distances to everything but the Born Free exhibit. The 30 amp electrical service and the enclosed tent were especially welcome as the weather varied over the 5 days of the event. It didn’t take long before the group was socializing, sharing experiences, and food. That night’s potluck featured Eric and Sue Sandstrom’s roast pork. After breakfast the next morning we all dispersed to view the more than 1100 new RV’s on exhibit and multiple vendors in 2 exhibit halls. Born Free had several coaches on display including the new 33 foot wide body coach on a Ford F550 chassis. That night was Pizza night sponsored by Born Free. Ed Newman and Kevin Lehrman from Dodgen Industries joined us. The entertainment that night was Malt Shoppe Memories, a Doo-Wop singing group (doo wop for all you youngsters out there was the Hip Hop music of the 50’s). Other entertainment that week included the Rick Arnold Show, a one man band, and the Rivoli Revue, a Branson style musical show featuring RV related songs and very corny jokes. Of course, we all got our cookies and coffee before the show and some were lucky enough to win door prizes. All the entertainment wasn’t at night. The SuperShow also featured a variety of entertainment during the day including clowns, unicycle jugglers, a bagpipe band trained dogs and more to keep us amused. The best entertainment was the night George Boley auctioned off items for charity.

One day a group toured the Salvador Dali Museum in St Petersburg. The building is as spectacular as the artwork inside. The docent shared insight into Dali’s work and life. Highly recommended if you’re in the area. Following the tour we enjoyed lunch on the St. Pete pier with 360 degree views of Tampa Bay. Some of us spent a considerable amount of time at the Hard Rock Casino, which was within walking distance of our campsite. I’m sure it was to enjoy the buffet since no one bragged about their winnings.

The 5 days went by quickly due to the excellent planning by our hosts Sue and Eric Sandstrom. See you all there next year. Check the link below for pictures of the event.
