2012 SW Region Newport Beach Rally Recap

Newport Beach Rally
April 23-26, 2012


This rally was at Newport Dunes Waterfront RV Resort and Marina adjoining the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve.

Everyone arrived by early afternoon on Monday, April 23rd. We exchanged hugs and news as we caught up with old friends and met some for the first time. Dinner was our customary potluck heavy appetizer dinner in the RV park’s Bayview Room, living up to its name in that it is located directly on the bay.

Tuesday morning, half of us carpooled to the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center on Upper Newport Bay. A naturalist met us and took us through the interpretive center where we saw a film regarding the birds that use this estuary in their migration of thousands of miles. She also showed us some of the creatures in the Center including her favorite snake. She then gave us binoculars and led us on a walk as she described the flora and fauna of the area along the water. We enjoyed sunny weather in the 70s that day and for the rest of the rally.

Late in the afternoon half of us carpooled to the city’s Newport Aquatic Center where we boarded double-hulled outrigger canoes and paddled for an hour on Upper Newport Bay enjoying the recreation and scenery. Meanwhile, the rest of us carpooled over to the Center and cheered the canoeists as they paddled in to shore. We enjoyed a catered barbecue dinner under the trees and a few feet from the water.

Wednesday turned out to be a free day because the Catalina trip was postponed a day due to predicted thunderstorms (which never arrived). During the day, most us who towed cars headed off to explore all the places in Newport Beach that we knew about or read about in the written suggestions compiled by the rally hosts. The rest of us went on a tour led by the rally hosts. We made a stop on Balboa Island to see the shops, then crossed the bay on the historic three-car Balboa Ferry. We then went down to “The Wedgeâ€
