Welcome to “Colorful Colorado”! Our rally will begin at the Durango KOA on Monday. Once everyone is checked in and set up, we’ll get together to meet our old and new friends for a heavy appetizer/potluck supper and make our plans for the next couple days. Tuesday morning, we will board the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad on which we will ride through the spectacular wilderness scenery of the San Juan Mountains and explore the historic gold and silver mining town of Silverton. Established in 1872 at 9,318 feet elevation, this is the last mining camp standing in the county, in the heart of the breath-taking San Juan Mountains. On Wednesday, you’ll have a day to explore on your own, the surrounding area and the town of Durango. Steeped in western charm, this vibrant downtown offers a destination filled with arts, culture and more restaurants per capita than San Francisco, six craft breweries, two distilleries, museums, shops and much more!

On Thursday, September 10th, we will be “rolling west” about 60 miles through easy terrain to Mesa Verde National Park. If you have a National Parks Senior Pass (available to US citizens 62 or older), or Veterans or Military ID., be sure to bring it along. This will give you free entry into the National Park where we will be camping for 2 nights at Morefield Campground. If you don’t have either (and you’re old enough to qualify) you can purchase an ANNUAL SENIOR PASS for $20.00 online, at the gate or at any other National Park that charges entrance fees. This pass will be good for 1 year and admits the holder as well as all passengers. As a military veteran you are also entitled to free admission to the park with ID. The entry fee for Mesa Verde National Park is currently $25.00 per vehicle.

We will be DRY CAMPING in Morefield Campground, just 4 miles inside Mesa Verde. Each site has a table, bench and grill. The campsites are situated on loop roads that extend through a high grassy canyon filled with Gambel Oak scrub, native flowers, deer and wild turkeys. Several of the park’s best hikes leave from Morefield and climb to spectacular views of surrounding valleys and mountains. There are handicap accessible restrooms in the campground and in the full-service village nearby there is a gas station, RV dumping station, coin-operated laundry, complimentary showers, a gift shop and grocery store. Also, a small boarding facility for those of you traveling with your 4- legged buddies. This is where you will check in for the campground.

On Friday, September 11th at 1pm., those of us selecting this option will be boarding a bus at Morefield Village, just outside our campground for the 5- hour, Ranger guided “700 Year Tour”. This interpretive tour brings history to life and goes back in time 1,400 years. We’ll walk the steps of the Puebloans in their amazing ancient dwelling, Cliff Palace and travel through 700 years on the Mesa Loop for a full picture of their ingenuity. This tour culminates with a ranger-led, 1- hour walking tour of Cliff Palace that will descend uneven stone steps and climb 4 ladders, with an elevation change of 100 feet. Total walking distance is ¼ mile and may not be suitable for those with disabilities or walking difficulties.
For those choosing to not take the 700 Year Tour, there are other less strenuous tours available through the Visitor’s Center or you may choose to drive the loop road through the park on your own.

Following our tour and back at Morefield Village, we will all board a dedicated shuttle bus to take us up to the Far View Lodge and the beautiful Metate Room Restaurant at the top of the park. We’ll share a delicious, final night/farewell group dinner with panoramic views that include 4 states. The shuttle bus will return us to our campground after our meal.

Saturday morning, sadly, our rally comes to an end and we must say adios.
