2010 LAKE TAHOE RALLY RECAP

The latest southwest region rally took place 8 – 12 September 2010 on the beautiful western shores of Lake Tahoe at the General Creek Campground within the Sugar Pine Point State Park with 11 coaches and 22 people attending. Our rally hosts were Don and Bev Bedard and Bill and Nancy MacLean and it was obvious from the start that they had put a great deal of planning and thought into each day’s activities.

DAY 1: By late afternoon, everyone had made the trip up the mountain and was enjoying meeting each other and catching up with those we hadn’t seen in awhile. Our evening meal was highlighted by spaghetti ala Don and received rave reviews. Some other favorites were the chocolate covered strawberries and brownies. Our first night was a bit chilly, but we had a great bonfire and a large tent area to get out of the passing rain and enjoyed telling stories of our travels.

DAY 2: After a morning breakfast, we were off for our first adventure, a 3 ½ hour narrated lake cruise aboard the Tahoe Gal from near the northern edge of the lake at Tahoe City to and through Emerald Bay near the southern edge and back. Calm water made for a nice cruise. Upon returning to shore, we all went to the River Grill restaurant located right on the Truckee River for heavy hors d’oeuvres featuring pork dumplings, calamari, shrimp, mini burgers and more. Our day ended with another night around the bonfire and more stories and tales.

Day 3: Three intrepid Born Free’ers took an optional early morning fishing trip on the lake and all caught at least 1 fish. Later, it was off to the historic Ehrman Mansion for a docent narrated tour of the mansion and the surrounding grounds. Hard to imagine that this huge and stately home and the 7000 feet of waterfront were only used for 2 to 2 ½ months a year. The provided evening dinner was a cookout that had been slated as “cook your ownâ€
