2016 Genesee Country Rally Recap

Post by bfadmin »

                                                                                        Genesee Country—Just Not Long Enough

Charlie and Helen Hathaway did one remarkable job when they prepared the agenda for September’s Genesee Country Rally (September 12-16, 2016). Beginning with the selection of the campground in Caledonia, NY, they managed to do everything right. Many of us agreed that perhaps the only “wrong” thing was that the rally wasn’t three or four times longer!

Beginning with the usual get-acquainted wine and cheese social and the later potluck dinner Monday night, September 12, we were treated to four days of non-stop fun, entertainment and education with many of us being treated to tours of places we had never seen or imagined.

Our first bus ride took us to Letchworth State Park in nearby Castile, NY, renowned as the “Grand Canyon of the East”. This park won the USA TODAY Readers’ Choice Award for Best State Park in the United States. It wasn’t hard to understand why. Lunch at the park at the Grand Iris Inn was also outstanding.

Our next trip by car and coach took us to Genesee Country Village for a tour of a 600 acre 19th century museum featuring the architecture of many area homes and buildings of that century most of which were structures that had been moved to that location. Also on the tour were demonstrations by local artisans of the crafts and skills of the day including weaving, pottery and tin work.

The next day’s visit to the George Eastman House in Rochester was the highlight of the rally for many of us who agreed that one could spend several days enjoying this beautiful home and its many photographic and film exhibits. Our tour hostess also shared many interesting anecdotes about Eastman, founder of the Eastman Kodak Company, a creative genius and generous philanthropist, who bequeathed his estate to the University of Rochester. In 1948, the university transferred the house to the museum.

Our visit to the Eastman home and museum was followed by a tour of the Genesee Brewery along with some sampling of various brews and lunch at the Brewhouse.

It wasn’t easy to say our goodbyes on Friday as we had truly enjoyed this rally as well as the chance to renew friendships and make new ones. There were 15 coaches and 28 members at the rally. Our farewell breakfast also provided us with the opportunity to present our Born Free president, Dean Preston, an award for his many years of service to the club.

The final breakfast gathering also gave us a chance to express our heartfelt thanks to our hosts. Charlie and Helen treated their Born Free guests to one fantastic time!
