Widening the sofa bed

Post by knreed »

Would appreciate ideas on ways to widen the sofa bed 6-8 inches when it is open.

Thanks

We had our sofa bed "widened" about five inches. The "widening" was done at the Born Free factory by moving the sofa bed toward the center of the coach. A wider wall bolster behind the sofa bed to fill in the wider space when the sofa is opened into a bed. Now our bed is about 50 inches wide. Still not as wide as a double bed, but wide enough for the two of us and our cat at the foot of the bed.

Six to eight inches probably is too much to "widen" the bed, because the position adjustment decreases the passage space by the same amount . . . even when the sofa bed is closed. This also places the sofa back in a position that interfers with tilting the cab seat back toward the sofa. That's why we settled on a five inch adjustment of the sofa position.

Please call Born Free customer service for a better explanation of what can be done.

When we bought our 02 26' RB - we had the factory take out the two captains chairs and table and put in a second couch facing the original. We now have a comfortable king size bed in which we have probably spent more than 200 nights. Works well for us.

When we were searching for our pre-loved Born Free, we wanted facing sofas to be able to have a "king size" bed. The unit we eventually purchased has the two lounge chairs and the sofa. After discussing the options with Kim Olsen at Born Free customer service, we decided to use the coach "as is" for awhile before replacing the chairs with an additional sofa. Turns out we like having the chairs and pull out table, and we decided not to replace them with a sofa.

We travel with our cat, and the space behind the chair located next to the galley is a great out-of-the-way place for the cat's food and water. It never gets stepped on or turned over. We would have had additional storage space with a sofa, but we really like having the chairs and table.

So, that's why we decided to have the sofa "widened" instead. If we sell the coach, the next owners can decide for themselves if they would rather replace the chairs with a sofa. But we would suggest that they use the coach "as is" before deciding whether to make such a change.
