Storm IRENE Damage in New England

We were in the process of taking our BF to Maine when this storm approached the East Coast, so we have delayed our plans. We were headed to Maine to search for a Summer home, in the Rockport, or Machiasport and nearby areas. We have heard no reports on what problems the storm created in that section of the country, and would greatly appreciate anyone in those areas reporting them here. We had hoped to be doing our looking at the time of Fall color, and wonder if the leaves and trees have been affected. Thanks, in advance, for any information. Would also appreciate any advice about RV camping in that part of the country. We live very near Fort Pickens National Seashore, here in Florida, and can highly recommend camping there. Reservations can be made on line until the end of October. The Gulf of Mexico is on the south side of the Island, and Pensacola Bay is on the north side. All is very beautiful.

We live in midcoast Maine and because of the western tract of Irene through New England, there is very little damage along the "Down East" coast of Maine. Fall foliage is more of an October event along the coast and keep in mind that many campgrounds close after the Columbus Day weekend. Camden Hills State Park in Camden is small but pleasant and Mt Battie with its beautiful views of the sea is part of that property. Just beyond Machias is Cobscook State Park in Dennysville. We have camped there several times and like it very much.

Thanks for your great news about "Down East" Maine. Glad the storm did not damage your area! All your info is helpful, and we hope to check out some of the parks you mentioned. Columbus Day comes a bit earlier than we had anticipated the closing dates. Guess, frost must start then?

About campgrounds closing around Columbus Day weekend, I have hear that in most of Maine, summer starts about July 4th and ends not long after August 1st.

Outside of an influx of tourists for the fall foliage 2-3 week season I think you will find most campgrounds pretty much empty after Labor Day weekend.

I know when we were in Maine in early/mid May 2008, we were there just as many of the private RV parks were opening and we usually were staying at the state parks just as they opened.
