For grins and giggles....just enter a trip from Corpus Christi TX (Laguna shores drive) <<begin>> to Stacy, MN <<end>> (you can put just the city name, I am nearly certain. *I35 and Stacy Trail (which is really cty rd 19 but you know, they have like 3 names for every street which just confuses these things.

I'd be curious to know how it routes you in, through, or around, the twin cities. You'd be on I35 from San Antonio TX all the way home, except a few round-a-bouts around bigger cities.

I'm going to try it on mine and see what it does... There's a 35W / 35E split just south of the cities, and 35E/35W rejoin just south of Forest Lake (north of St. Paul/mpls) . Or does it take you around 494/694. (The last time I have done that, the road construction was AWFUL on both of those routes...either east or west around the cities. )

I'll route mine on Copilot Live Laptop and you can do yours and then I'll tell you from personal experience what the absolute fastest/easiest is.

Okay, my results are a disappointment to me. My starting location is

27 37' 9.5"N
97 17' 50.1"W
Laguna shores Rd.

And I have "home" programmed in but the gps and map do not sync near there. Tney have my street address on the next little street over, and they have Sunrise grocery store on the wrong side of the Interstate!

How impressive.

But the worse part is that Copilot Laptop Live 8 has routed me right through 35 N to 35 E and then back to 35N and right over the "parkway" part of 35E where the gvw is 9,000 lbs max. Not helpful. If I were not from around there, how would I go after I realized that the routing was wrong?

Wondering how yours did.

Hi Trisha,

Oh, now I see 35e. I told you it was snowing... :-)

It does take 35e through eagan and st paul, so if that's the stretch with the weight limit, it doesn't have it.

CHARLOTTE wrote:As I'm sure many of you who read this forum regularly know that I have a Garmin GPS. It is a real treasure for people like me who have absolutely no sense of direction. It has saved me countless hours during my traveling and wear & tear on my nerves besides. It's been my #1 favorite product that I've ever purchased (besides my BF of course). Anyway, I've just become aware of a new Garmin product (the 7500) that I would like to buy. Reason is I'm going to be traveling over most of the country after leaving the Iowa Rally and the 7500 will guide me (as a solo driver/traveler) with more detail than my 2620 gives me. So at this time I want to sell my 2620 to help pay for the 7500. It is in perfect condition & comes with everything up to date, including the remote control, etc. (I've even got the original box etc.) If any one is interested please contact me...I will be putting it on e-bay if there's no interest here...Again, it's like brand new...

Leroy: ? your post didn't post. Only have the quote of Char.

Bill and everyone: I guess all of us who use gps must be careful. When heading North through the twin cities, Minnesota on 35, if you weigh more than 9,000 lbs, you cannot stay on I 35E through st. Paul no matter what your gps says. There is a stretch of about 20 miles south of 94 E/W and N of 494 that is weight restricted. By the time you get there, it will be a total pain to avoid it.

Better to stick to 35W (which goes through downtown minneapolis, and while it has some curves and some traffic, try it at non-rush hours (and try to avoid big game times at the U of M. Other than that, I find that, since I can't take 35 E, 35 W is the next fastes way. There is significant road construction on 494 if you go east around the cities, and there is significant construction on 694 if you go west, (494 goes around the cities south of 94, 694 is the upper half the loop, north of 94.) So the 694 work is in the north Mpls area, and the 494 constuction is the south st. paul area.

Both of them will keep you tied up for quite a while during the day.

maybe they've finished by now. I don't know. I just try to hit it after 7 or 8 p.m. and drive right through mpls and get through pretty quickly that way.

One of those times when I really rather drive late in the day. Any time I'm in a big city, I rather do weekends or nights. I bet if you do accidentally take 35E, nobody willnotice, but who needs to get a ticket?

Hi Trisha,

I'm not surprised garmin mapsource didn't have the weight limit. I also know of two low overpasses mapsource routes under even if the vehicle is set to truck. That height and weight part of the database certainly needs improvement.

Post by Trisha »

Well, Garmin isn't the only one that fell down.

CoPilot, at least, has a huge installed trucking base, so they are more aware of the height limitations, apparently. But the weight thing I'm surprised they missed. No semis on 35 E either.

Looks like many of them miss it.

The other thing to be sure of, is that any GPS designed for cars, etc., might be less than up to date on propane restricted routes.

I guess we still need people in the world. Comforting thought!

Garmin....SOLD

Post by CHARLOTTE »

Please note...I have sold my Garmin GPS to a BF owner. Thanks to all who were kind enough to respond...Spoke to Garmin also about the new 7500 and 7200. They explained in detail the differences between my 2620 and those 2 new products. I've decided to buy the 7200 based on the information given me. I just love that company...they are so customer friendly and helpful. Anyhow, what was interesting and what I was not aware of is, there's a connection for a back-up camera for these units...not having such a thing now...I was just thinking that in the future that might be a handy connection to have...Just passing infor. on....

new GPS

Post by Mary Ann »

I purchased a GPS at the end of March in anticipation of the Humbolt reunion, which is a LONG way from my home in NW Florida. I checked dozens of price comparison sites (easily found via Google), and purchased my Garmin Street Pilot 2720 from GPSonSale. I decided against the new 7200 because it requires joining one of the exotic radio systems, which has monthly dues, just like cable TV. My Born Free has a great radio, and it seems easy to get weather info, expecially compared to the cost difference, but whichever model, you choose, check the prices where I bought mine. Their email is: info@gpsonsale.com, and phone is 480-982-0653. I travel alone with my dog, who can't read maps, so my GPS is a wonderful assist. I have mine set to speak, so I can keep my eye on the road. I find it is great for other places than my final desitnation, as it will find, fuel, food, lodging, etc, and lead you to it. I love mine. Good luck with your search and purchase.

First, let me say, enjoy your new Garmin! I'm sure you will.

Whether or not to subscribe to satellite radio is a personal choice, but there are some things that can temper your opinion. I held the same opinion you did until this winter, driving through West Texas a few times.

The radio in the born free is great, so long as there are radio stations transmitting in the area.

Try driving across West Texas on I10. You'll be wanting that Sirius radio abou tthen. There's ONE station. Period. If you're lucky. Sometimes, the dial just spins and spins and spins. Nada.

I love my sirius radio. Got one with a free one year's service in the jeep. Have all kinds of radio even in the middle of nowhere! Like West Texas or the Colorado Rockies. I'm sold.

But if you're never in W. Texas, it's no biggie. Just can't say that regular radio is always there...and it's good enogh. There are plenty of places where there is no gas, no radio, no nothing. Oh, that's another thing, if you've got the ability to get gas in W. Texas, no matter what it cost, get it. You may not see another station for 250 miles.

:)

Thanks, Trish, re West Texas. You're right. I have driven in West Texas, and was grateful for "talking books" and pre recorded music. You have made me think....I will carry my portable weather radio (I do live in Hurricane Alley, so, of course I have one.), in case I need it. It broadcasts all over the U.S., concerning local conditions. Thanks for the reminder. Glad you like Sirius. Hope to see you in Humbolt.

Hi Charlotte,

It's a Sirius Sattelite radio. The one in the jeep came factory installed. It has about 100 stations but it doesn't transmit to external radios, only plays on the jeep radio it came on.

The cool ones are the ones you buy that are little units that receive the sat radio, and then you can set then to an FM frequency and they will transmit on a frequency you select...then you can pick up the Sirius radio signal on any other radio that can tune in that fm frequency (you have to buy the 'home' or 'car' package to do this... then you can tune your stereo, your boom box, whatever, into the satellite stations.

An RVing friend showed me his when we visited in Texas. It's really cool.

Your regular radio acts like the radio, but it can pick up one more station, which is satellite, which you can tune to anything. NPR, CNN, Fox news, music, whatever, espn.

XM and Sirius are competitors and have slightly different programming options so you may want to look at which ones have the programs you like most. They offer several packages.

I get sirius satellite via my satellite TV package at home, and now in the jeep. It's great. Hook it into the home entertainment system and listen to whatever you like.

Books on tape and music CD's are great also, a lifesaver, but I get so sick of them after a while. I've travelled 18,800 miles in the year I've owned my Born free (doesn't include any car miles). Nearly 20,000 miles. figure that into hours driving at an average 60 mph and that's 303 hours of listening. 303 hours. The average CD is 45 minutes long, so thats the equivalent of 404 CD's played (some played more than once or twice.

I don't know about you, but even with what some think is an extensive collection, remove the holiday music and etc...and I don't have anyting I want to hear as often as I've already listened! I have gone on a CD buying trip for new and additional music... but there's gotta be a better way. From the time I left El Paso until the time I got back into radio space in San Antonio the next day (camped at Balmorea one night...no radio)....that's nearly 36 hours without anything to listen to but my own same sad collection (ugh> I am getting sick of them. :)

Silence works for a while too. But you get my drift.

Oh, and you have to carry all those CD.'s. They gotta go somewhere. Actually, I am tryng something else this time...I'm going to try a bose system where you can record on hard drive up to 200 CD;'s with of music. That way I don't have to carry those 200 CD's and can have another 45 or so on hand, and THEN I'll have a little variety/! <grin>

I do like an ecclectic mix.

by the way, San Marcos has a CD outlet store. I didn't stop. Wish I had.

Hope this was a help.

Thanks Trish...I knew you'd give me a really good explanation that I could understand. Gonna go to Radio Shack and check it out as soon as I can. Having my Master bathroom remodeled right now & can't even think straight. Was married to a Contractor & we built our home in the Santa Cruz mountains and that was easier than having these no-name numbskulls do a simple small bathroom fix....driving me nuts! Anyhow, when do you think you'll be in Iowa? Want to hear all about those 20,000 miles you've put on your BF and support you on the much needed manual (written in a laysmen language)...sure would help a whole bunch of us... Meantime, take care & be safe...and...stay in touch here
