Bulb for outside porch light

Post by shilohdad »

The bulb for our outside porch light (the one to the left of the entry door on a 24 RB) has burned out. The bulb has no markings on it. It looks kind of like a standard automotive type bulb. Does anybody know if this is the case, or if not, where we can get a replacement.

Well, I sent off an e-mail to Kim. He responded that he thought the bulb was a standard automotive 1003 bulb (I guess that's what goes in the current models). I looked that up on the web, and it appears to be correct. It is a .94 amp bulb with the proper base. In browsing the Born Free owner's manual, I found a page for converter calculations. It shows all the 12V items in the 24RB. There is an entry for a Bargman exterior light, and it is indeed rated at .94 amps.

So, my final answer is: a standard 1003 bulb. I'll get one from NAPA, AutoZone or wherever.

How about converting to an LED: http://www.superbrightleds.com/bulb_cross.php Looks like the #67 is the cross reference to a 1003 bulb.

Steve, maybe it is me but I find that LED light site very confusing. What is the bulb I should order if I want an exact LED replacement in light/wattage for the 1003 bulb?

Thanks, Bill

Bill, I agree with you. I could not easily determine what is what on that site.

Also, given that I have only dial-up access, the site was slooooooow. I never did get to the point where I could get to a price. However, I know that I paid over $20 to replace the light in the stove hood with an LED. However, since I have had to replace that light twice already, I figured that was OK. Also, I get better lighting there with the LED.

However, I don't think I want to pay $20+ to replace the porch light. It took over 5 years for it to burn out. The light it cast was just fine. To replace it with another incandescent will probably cost about $3. I would have to keep this coach for over 20 years to make up the price difference. I don't think so!

Sears has the 1003 bulbs for $1.30 each at our local store in Quakertown, PA. Auto stores wanted 2.50 to 3.25.

I passed an auto parts store locally and got a package of two from GE for $2.99. The 1003 bulb is physically smaller than the one that was originally in the lighting unit, but seems to work just fine. And now I have a spare for when this one dies.

Here is what one web site claimed as the specs for the 1003 bulb they sell:

CEC Industries #1003 MINIATURE BULB BA15S BASE - 12.8 Volt .94 Amp B6 Single Contact (SC) Bayonet (BA15s) Base, 15 MSCP. 200 Average Rated Hours, 1.75" Maximum Overall Length. #1003

Joe & Lucinda, the 1003 bulb is also a 1156 and the base is a BA15s single contact bulb. Here is the info from superbrightleds.com:

67-x15: 15-LED BA15S bulb
15-LED Single Intensity 15mm Bayonet base replacement bulb
Same base size as 1156(67) smaller bulb
Unique Design has 9 LEDs aiming out the end and 6 radially mounted LEDs aiming 90 degrees from the base
Select LED color to match vehicle lens color
Price for each: $ 4.95 http://goo.gl/GK8YY

However I think you you may want something like this: 18-LED Tower Type 1156 & 1157 Bulbs

3 x Foward Firing SMD LEDs, 15 x Radially Mounted 5050SMD LEDs, 120 degree beam LEDs, 360 degree beam lamp. These bulbs emulate standard incandescent stock bulb with entire lamp housing illumination and no hotspot. (210ma max or .21A) 30,000 hour life.
1156-x18-T: 18HP-LED BA15S Tower Bulb ($17.95) http://goo.gl/ubcIB

If you do any dry camping and like to leave your outside porch light on then you won't deplete your coach batteries as fast.
