Ford phasing out E-Series line ?

Post by liginbf »

Just caught quick blip on tv, Ford phasing out E-series going to T-series which would be Transit model for 2013. It had a very euro look, like the Sprinter. I could not find any info on-line if the whole series to be dropped. There are multiple engine choices(diesel) and front, rear and awd options, would make for some interesting BF's in near future.

RV Business posted the story about the E-series being discontinued. The T series(transit) is that small little box van from offshore that is now being used by many companies for intercity deliveries...very econominical and well built. Payload including driver is less than 2,000lbs. So far, emails to Dodgen Industries on what future chassis they are considering, starting in 2013, have not been answered. This is an issue for all class C manufacturers.

I'am familiar with smaller Transit, this model appears to be full size, they ref. I-5 turbo diesel w/6spd trans. Looks very similar to the Sprinter chassis.

With the E series getting 6-10 MPG with the V-10, I would think Ford is going to have to do something to be able to comply with the government mandated fuel economy regulations going into effect in a few years or maybe sooner than a few years.

Does anyone have any online websites with info on the new full sized T series mentioned above?

Over the years I have been involved as a design consultant for a company who does chassis modifications for shuttle buses, cargo vans etc using the Ford E series and F series platforms. Ford publishes a book called the Body Builders Advisory Book. There you can find information on these vehicles and it doesn't look like they are phasing out the E series just yet. Here is the url to that online book:

Don't confuse the Transit Connect with other Transit models. The Transit Connect is the small box van; the general Transit line are full-sized vans competing against the Sprinter, and could make a reasonable Class C.

The van is being discontinued. The E-series V-8 and V-10 cab and chassis for motor homes will be continued.

Ford Drops E-Series Van, Replaces with Transit

Post by DennisMary »

Come 2013, Ford will replace the long-running E-Series of vans with Europe's Transit van, The Detroit News reports. How long-running is it? The E-Series dates back to 1960.

Its replacement has similar chops. Ford says it's sold more than 6 million Transits across 75 countries in more than 40 years. We'll get the next-generation Transit, which will be built at Ford's Kansas City, Mo., plant — part of a $1.1 billion investment to build the full-size van plus the next-gen F-150. The current E-Series is built in Ohio.
Don't confuse the Transit with the smaller Transit Connect, which is already on sale here. Sold overseas, its current sibling has a plethora of wheelbases and roof heights typical of a full-size van. Expect Ford to show the next-gen Transit at one of next year's auto shows.

Although utility vans like the E-Class and Transit Connect represent just 2% of the auto market, sales are up 20% through November. There's hope the uptick could continue. The U.S. Census Bureau reported seasonally adjusted sales for new single-family homes had improved to their highest annualized rate since May, so contractors and other small-business owners could see better times ahead.

We'll keep you posted as we learn more about the next-gen Transit, but Ford officials told the Detroit News the next-gen Transit will be unibody, not body-on-frame like the E-Series, and 25% more fuel efficient because it will shed 300 pounds.

Just read an article in The Detroit News, dated Dec. 08-2011, that said that although Ford plans to discontinue the E Series Van, it will continue to make the E-Series Cutaways at their Ohio Assy. Plant in Avon Lake. Same article also mentioned Ford ha prepped engines that can run on compressed natural gas or liquid propane and be used across all commercial vehicles. Hope this includes the new big V-8 that is scheduled to replace the current V-10.
