Post by stevek »

Where do you carry a canoe or kayak at?
On the roof?
If so, how do you get up and down?
thanks..

does anyone carry a canoe or kayak on Born Free

We do not own a canoe, but have met a couple in our travels who carry a canoe on the roof. They told us that the factory made the rack and system (I think it was a pulley type) that allowed them to access/store the canoe from the ground. Perhaps you could email Kim and ask him more about this setup.

Thanks Jennifer.
I will call Kim.
I was even thinking about one of these boats that fold up.

Anybody have any comments, or own one of these boats?

I saw these Porta-Boats on Shark Tank. They were pretty neat but also pretty costly at the time. Not sure how much they are now. If you know, could you post it. Thanks.

Saw this post on the web on pricing (see image below) as of March 2013.

Sure irritates me when companies like Porta-Bote make getting prices as painful as getting teeth pulled.

We were also interested. Liked the porta-bote, but found them to be very heavy, and cumbersome to set up and take down. Talked to a couple who had one for their Class C and they said the same thing and that they would not do it again. We tow a small sedan on which we carry our tandem sit-upon kayak. For us, it was the perfect solution.
In the past we had two inflatable kayaks but discovered they did not track well as there was no keel to speak of. I have read lately that there have been improvements made in the inflatables so perhaps that might be your solution.

We have the porta boat and what a PITA it is to fold. Took forever to put together so it stays that way and is in the garage.

Have you looked into this?

Thanks everybody.
And for the options..
The Porta Bote company emailed me a sale price.
For example, $2100 shipped for the 12 footer.
Something for me to think about.
Some are for sale on craigs.
Thanks for info on unfolding and folding and how hard it is to do.
Something inflatable is an option too. Thanks for link.

I have a Hobie i12s Kayak, it's a high pressure inflatable kayak, with the foot pedal Mirage drive system. It's a nice craft, I have taken it on the Chesapeake in a 1 to 2 foot chop, a bit wet in seas that big, but fun. It is really in its element on flat water. I got the sailing kit and bigger blades, which adds another element to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AqLysEm ... 58A44D2F6A

When deflated it stores on the rear bed in it's case. They make a smaller 9' and a two person 14' version. I suppose you could get it up on the BF roof, but my aging body would object.

Thanks Ed, I just back camping and my next door camping neighbor had one like yours that was Hobie 9 footer. Did look real nice/ very good quality, and is an option for me.. He told me all about it.
He was fly fishing from it, catch and release.
I would be interested in the one for 2 people.
He told me he paid $1600 for his, just to give everyone an idea of prices.

i think i can get one inside thru the rear emergency window above the bed. the window measures about 27 x27 and hinges at the top so it opens fully. anyone else try to fit one inside?
