Any suggestions for Michigan and Wisconsin

Post by jlef123 »

We are planning on attending the Door County rally this summer. Afterwords we are thinking of visiting the south shore of Lake Superior and the perimeter of Lake Michigan. Any suggestions for must see places in this region.

First of all, come to see us in the Leelanau Peninsula, which we think is the best part of Michigan. Visit Traverse City, which has a state park campground with beach access. In TC, experience the huge wine and foodie scene. There are many pretty good wineries in awesome locations, and craft breweries and other distilleries and cider makers. If you can, get a reservation in the RV campground in the southern part of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore near Frankfort. I think the website locates the campground in Empire and it books up really early. There are some electric sites and you can walk a ways to Lake Michigan and also float on a tube down the Platte River to Lake Michigan. It is classic "up North". Also visit the Lakeshore near Glen Arbor, where the beaches were voted the best in America 2 years ago on Good Morning America. There are also some wonderful hiking trails in the Lakeshore; we think the best is Pyramid Point, which gives you a wonderful vista of the Manitou Islands. There is a very good bike trail out of Glen Arbor and you can rent bikes. Petoskey and Harbor Springs are picturesque but mostly shopping oriented. There is a good KOA in Petoskey. We travel through the UP frequently and find it not so interesting but Whitefish Point is worth seeing and the state park near there is pretty good. We also like the Ludington and Holland areas. More good beaches. If you want to take a tourist beach dune ride, go to Silver Lake near Mears. It is a blast! Overall, the scenery is gorgeous and the people friendly. We are not employed by the tourist bureau, just love where we live!

I really enjoyed the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point.

The downside is it will take at least two days for you to stop humming THE WRECK OF THE EDMUND FITZGERALD. More if you are a fan of Gordon Lightfoot. :D

Dang, Dallas, now I am hearing that blasted song in my head! It floods the radios stations every year in northern MI and the Detroit area on the anniversary of the sinking. There is a ceremony every year in Mariner's Church in Detroit and also at Whitefish Point to commerate those souls lost to the Lakes. The power of the Great Lakes is really awesome.
