Bumper Storage Repair

Post by BikerJohn »

Anyone have an idea on the best way to fix the storage that was on my bumper? The whole container has fallen out (I removed it once it was bad enough) due to the wood rotting on the underside of the bumper. The wood that is under the fiberglass has rotted out and I don't want to count on the fiberglass for holding the storage container. I thought of cutting a new piece of wood, but it would end up being cantilevered out from other that is good a and that always worries me. I was thinking of fabricating something that uses the steel angle that is inside the bumper. Has anyone done something like that before?

I'll upload pics later today, but looks like the ones I took are too large.

John; I had a 2003 24'RB and lost the bin, containing my electrical hook-up cord, while driving through Guatemala. I got a shop in Brazil to fabricate a new bin with galvanized metal with a flange. It was still in place when I traded in on a new 2005 26'RB in Humboldt. With the new rig I caught that portion of the bumper that extends out slightly and broke it badly. I removed the bumper and took it to a couple of boat repair shops ( we live on the coast) and they quoted boat marine prices $1200 plus. I then got a quote from an Auto repair and paint shop. They said that they do a lot of fiber-glass repairs on cars. They got the color code off of the label by the drivers door, and as I told them I was not in a hurry (any time in the next 3-4 weeks) they quoted $400. They did a beautiful job and one week later I had what looked like a new bumper. They patched the bin and the bumper itself. So I am suggesting that you remove the bumper and shop it around your area for a repair quote.
