Whats the max PSI my water lines can handle when in RV park?

Post by stevek »

I normally carry a pressure gauge + a pressure reducer.
But was just curious on max pressure, where I should be concerned.
I have seen the water pressure, where the gauge climbed to 100 psi at one RV park,
before I turned the water off and installed my pressure reducer valve.
And it was a KOA park in CA.
Should I have been concerned?

Some of these junky/ old parks we have stayed in, just makes me wonder.
Also cross connections. I have seen them too.
I guess there is not much you can do about cross connections.
Maybe carry a back flow preventer? Anybody carry this?

Plus the electrical... but that a whole other story..

Steve,

Copied below is the paragraph copied out of the User Guide for 2015 model year Born Free motorcoaches. Note that it does not list a maximum water pressure but in my opinion is that if it exceeds 60 psi, you should use a pressure reducer. I use one that limits the pressure to 50 psi.

City Water Connection
A City Water Connection (Figure 5.3) has been provided on the outside of the motorcoach. This connection is to be used when the motorcoach is parked in a campground that has hookup facilities for “city water”. To use, turn off the demand pump and connect a water hose to this fitting. The city water pressure will provide adequate water flow. The city water connection will bypass the fresh water system and will not fill the fresh water tank. Some water systems have very high water pressure; to guard against damage to pressure-limiting components, it would be wise to use a standard pressure reducer in your hose line.

Thanks Bill.
What about cross connection?
Have you or anybody else ever experienced a potential cross connection where you hooked up the water.

I did one time.... top of box was ground level. Water valve/ connection was below grade.
Box and valves were flooded because of leak.
I connected my water hose, and tighten as hard as I could.
Given the same experience in the future, not sure what I would do?
Anybody have an idea? What should I carry?

I imagine the reason water box was at ground level, was the ease of mowing the gas.
And when they watered the lawn, it could flood all the boxes.
This RV park was a County Fair Ground in CA.

Steve,

Sorry but I guess I am not familiar with the term cross connection. Can you explain that in more detail?

Here is a pic.
In my case.. water faucet that I hooked up to was in a box, and below grade and below the lawn and could be flooded.
When they watered lawn, box would flood.
For example, if they had fertilized lawn, water in box would be contaminated.
Like the picture of the laundry tube.
No real simple solution, beside making sure hose bib was on supper tight.

Steve,

Now that you have explained it, I believe it would be best to never hookup into such a situation. I have seen cases several times in RV parks where a single fresh water pipe extends out of the ground but is connected to as many as 4 faucets. As long as the other 3 faucets that you are not connected to are also only going to other RV fresh water tanks, it probably is not a problem but maybe you don't know that for sure.

Bill, here a picture of the cross connection I was talking about.
2 spigots. One for me, the other for the site next door.
I stayed here a few days and saw this box flooded with water.
This was at a Calif. County Fair Ground.
I can see why they had this design. Just cover the box and water and mow the lawn right over it.
