Is it Towed or Toad or Both?

Post by stevek »

Just wondering. Are both terms correct?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Both terms are used and are used interchangeably.

Thanks Bill. I wonder where the word Toad came from?

toad (n.) Look up toad at Dictionary.com
c. 1300, from late Old English tadige, tadie, of unknown origin and according to OED with no known cognates outside English. Applied to loathsome persons from 1560s. Toad-strangler "heavy rain" is from 1919, U.S. Southern dialectal.

Toad is, of course, a homonym for towed.

Per the Good Sam RV glossary you have the following:

Dinghy - A vehicle towed behind a motorhome, sometimes with two wheels on a special trailer called a tow dolly, but often with all four wheels on the ground.

Toad - Term for room (generally in older RVs) that "tipped-out" for additional living space once RV was parked. Newer RVs mainly use 'slide-out' rooms

I never did get Toad, but Dingy made sense to me. A room that tips out also makes no sense to me, but then again many things in life seem a little bizzare to me, but probably not to you.

As a sailboat owner, I've always called my towed vehicle a "dinghy." It just makes more sense to me as a dinghy is towed by a sailboat.

Now, I confess I'm not a fan of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee either, but c'mon, that's just harsh!

dont get me wrong i LOVE my Jeep Cherokee, its a great balance of room, true 4x4 off road capability that can tow 4500lbs with our heavy duty towing package and still gets 27mpg, and we have the transmission package that allows 4 down towing, its litterally the perfect vehicle for our needs but unfortunatly looks too much like those Girly crossovers :P
