Currently in Spencer, IA the 89 octane gas with 10% ethanol is $1.549/gallon. I was in Tulsa, OK the 2nd week of January and the same fuel was only $1.389/gallon at that time.

There are lots of reasons for retiring in California, but cheap gas (or diesel) is not one of them. Paid $2.29 for unleaded gas at Costco

In 1963 while attending USAF Officer Training School in San Antonio, TX I once paid 8 cents a gallon. There was a "gas war" in progress. It usually sold then at around 30 cents a gallon. In my job, just prior to my military service, I made $4,200 a year as an accountant fresh out of college.

Today an entry level accounting salary is between 10 and 15 times what I made then so a comparable per gallon gas price would be in the range $3.00 to $4.50. The good old days were not any better than today, and if judged only by gas price, today is better since the lowest price in Mobile I have recently seen is $1.42 per gallon.

$1.799 for regular at BJ's Wholesale Club in Brookfield, CT, with BJ's member discount. Elsewhere in the area we were seeing prices of $1.899 cash, $1.999 credit. Over the state line in NY the prices are about 10 to 20 cents higher, even more in the clip-joint town we live in.

Any stories on the old days?
Gas is suppose to go up here in CA because of change in "blend".
Also worth noting, Oregon has NO self service. Kind of nice. :D

$2.10 at Costco in San Marcos, CA. Was 10 cents cheaper a week ago. Supposed to go up another 30-40 cents when they change it to the "Summer Blend." What? Your state doesn't rip you off with a "Summer Blend?" :x

bcope,

Your rant is on target! I heard a report on PBS that the most it cost oil companies to switch to the summer blend to meet CA standards is 10 cents per gallon. It is my understanding that prices will rise 30 to 40 cents per gallon. A bit of price gouging by big oil.

Yes a ripoff by big oil, precipitated by a government regulation of questionable value. If you follow the money, me thinks some of those excess charges wind up in the pockets of politicians and special interest groups.
