Yes, expensive but given how few are sold, not surprisingly they will only get more costly. Also surprisingly unrobust

I know this is old but our step failed on this trip. I ordered the full Monty: controller, motor and gearbox. I will crawl under this weekend when they get delivered and start changing parts..

Its not difficult unless you have to remove the step because its awkward to replace. Good stuff on Youtube. I think these things fail because we insist on standing on the step before the assembly completes its cycle. Its very tempting but we have to be patient.

We have had no problems in the last 2 years but we keep it oiled. Hope we did not just jinx it!

Mine failed on the retract. The extend works great. There are plastic gears in there and eventually they will wear out.

Since I took it apart at the camp ground and allowed the gears to move a bit so it would at least extend it was a simple process to change the motor and the gears. They came assembled as one unit and it was one connector one Cotter pin and thru pin and four bolts and washers. It took twenty mins in the garage. I might carry a spare unit with mean the future.
