Insurance

Post by walkyourway »

I have just received an up to date quotation from my insurance company (State Farm) for my 2015 Freedom. $3500 a year!! This for something I might get to use for 2 months a year. Could anyone please let me know how much you pay and what insurance company you use?

Thank you

I have Progressive insurance on my 2002 BF 26' RSB coach with full coverage including $500,000 single limit liability. The cost was $528 for the current year.

Thank you for your reply and info. Double checked with State Farm and guess what? "oops! sorry about that - should have been $1000 not $3500". Do these people try it on?

Dumped State Farm after 46 years for Progressive via USAA a few years back bc of price gouging. Very happy we made the move!

Just got dumped yesterday by Nationwide, which we purchased through FMCA. They stated that the agent handling the policy no longer was affiliated with them. I am presently getting quotes from several different companies. I did check with Nationwide about renewing the covereage directly with them. The cost went up from $1268 to $1749 with a substantial decrease in covereage. You think that with not having to pay an agent a commision that the price would have gone down or at least stayed the same. Not going to renew. I have had Progressive in the past through USAA but dropped them several years ago when they increased my cost about 20% with no explanation. It really annoys me when insurance companies raise their rates that much. Its important to have insurance but I do not trust most of the companies. USAA is one of the exceptions but they do not write RV insurance directly. My wife and I have clean driving records and an excellent credit rating which should give us a lower rate. Southeast Florida has one of the higher cost insurance ratings. If I lived in North FL my insurance cost would probably be at least 1/3 cheaper. So Chris I believe the answer to your query is that insurance rates depend on so many variables that it is next to impossible to compare yours with another Leap'n Lions member. I would love to have your $1000/year cost but I suspect that is not going to happen. All you can do is get competitive quotes when the Insurance company tries to mess with you.

We also are using Progressive via USAA. We pay about $355 a year on a 2003 24' RB (Rear Bath). We the basic coverage limits. With an estimate of 30 days of use a year. I am 43 years old with a clean record and I have home owners and other auto policies with USAA, I know there are a lot of factors that go into insurance pricing.

I am fortunate that I had USAA insurance before they dropped direct coverage. I am grandfathered in, but if I buy another RV I will have to go with their Progressive offering or another company. My 1,000,000/1,000,000/500,000 coverage cost approximately $680 a year. As Delbert McClinton sung, “I am one of the fortunate few” (He wasn’t singing about insurance though!)

KevinVT,

Is your $355 figure per year? I ask because my USAA policy is for 6 months and I am billed twice a year.

Dallas,

Yup, pretty crazy low I think... and good coverage. I have USAA auto and home, but the RV is on Progressive with a discount connected to USAA somehow.

We have just received an updated annual renewal rate from National General Insurance for $564. This is for full coverage with limits of 500,000/500,000 and with a $1,000 deductible.

Age plays a significant role in motorhome coverage. I'm 63 and I have all of my policies (home, two cars, two motorhomes, business, and two apartment buildings) through Grinnell and a local agent. Fortunately they treat the coverage on the motorhomes almost as an afterthought. IIRC, my '06 32RQ is $312/year with $1m liability and $1000 deductible. I just had to have my now-deceased father's motorhome moved to my policy while I'm working to get it sold. He was 87 and his premium was $1600/year. My agent tells me that the cost auto/moho policies start climbing at age 70, and the older you get, the more significant the increase.

This is a followup to my previous post on finding a new policy. In my search the best price and best coverage was from National General, $1149 (Total loss replacement of the original price) but the worst reviews of any of the companies I contacted. The most interesting quotes were from Progressive Insurance. I had quotes for them through USAA, FMCA, Good Sam Club and Twin Peaks Insurance Co. All of these quotes were for the same basic coverage with slight variations in some details. Progressive through USAA was $1682, Good Sam $1113, FMCA $1431 Twin Peaks $1155. I went back and forth with Good Sam and FMCA and eventually their price became the same at $1278 and every detail of the policy was identical. I never went back to USAA because they were so out of line. I finally called Twin Peaks to get a competitive bid on a company that turned out to be out of the RV business. The agent then quoted me a price on Progressive. Because of her knowledge of the variabilities affecting the price I got a policy from Progressive that was better than Good Sam (the initial Good Sam quote left out some essential items) or FMCA and less expensive. Some of the unusual variables that effected the price with Progressive included Rating Base or method of calculating the value of the coach, garaging zip code and mailing address zip code (cheaper if the same, set the policy to receive all docs electronically), safe Driver discounts and association memberships. So the bottom line is get a lot of quotes from different sources and question everything. By the way Good Sam was very aggressive in their attempt to get me to go with them. Felt like I was talking to a used car salesman.

I should clarify what State Farm have now told me in reference to the quotation for my 2015 Freedom. The original quote was $3500 and they say this was an error because the agent noted the incorrect VIN number. (I wonder what they were quoting for?) The last figure quoted is $1350.

Lessons learned: Don't trust an agent to get the details correct, don't panic, and never ever assume that you made a mistake in buying a Born Free!
