A/C locked up

Post by BlakeLinda »

We are running off the generator tonight and turned the A/C on and it only ran a few minutes and it choked the generator down and off. Never had any A/C problems until tonight. Anyone have any knowledge or suggestions?
Appreciate input!

First make sure your chassis fuel tank is above 1/4 full as the generator only draws fuel from the top 3/4 of the tank capacity. Also, if your generator is an Onan 4KW unit, a partially plugged fuel filter may not permit enough of a fuel flow when a heavy load such as when your AC is turned on. There is also the possibility that your generator's fuel pump may be getting weak allowing it to supply only a small amount of fuel to the generator's engine when under load.

Restart the generator again with the AC off. If it starts and runs with no load but then dies when you turn on the AC, I would suspect either the fuel filter or the fuel pump.

We have a full tank of gas and the generator is a Generac. We first thought it was our A/C unit but after we started it again, at the generator, it did not run well. We restarted it again and tried the microwave this time and it ran down again. You may be spot on. We hope it will be a reasonable fix. Thanks for the suggestion.

Update:
We found a company nearby that graciously took a look at our generator. They decided to take the carburetor down to clean, after finding there was NO inline filter to the generator. After a simple cleaning and blowing out, the carburetor was reinstalled and ran perfectly! We made our destination and the next step is to add an inline filter when we get home. Thank you again, Bill, for steering us in the right direction!!

Blake,

You might want to use a fuel additive to keep your carb from gumming up. I use Startron in all of our gas and diesel engines.

The product can be purchased at auto parts stores, Walmart, Amazon and West Marine. WM has bigger quantities and will have the pint size on sale starting June 27th. http://www.westmarine.com

Fuels today are so poor, a fuel additive might be a good idea.
Thanks for the links!!!
