Does anybody carry tire chains.

Post by stevek »

That time of year again. Snowy roads in the higher passes.
I keep thinking I should buy a set of chains/ cables... for the BF.
I guess just chaining up the outside tire on the rear duals would be good enough?
Any ideas/ comments/ input. Thanks.
Happy Holidays.. :D

Steve,

On most of the Born Free coaches that I am familiar with there is not a lot of clearance space between the rear duals and the coach body structure. Make sure that any chains that you purchase will provide adequate clearance.

Sounds like you've got it figured out. Rolling the inside dual onto a board lifting the outside dual off the ground can make it easier to get a snug fit. The best way to deal with the snowy roads is wait at home or find a park at the bottom of the mountain and wait for the sun to come out. (It's one of the best benefits of having an RV :) )

FYI visitors to snow country: In OR or CA - not sure elsewhere - it'll cost you  if you're caught not carrying chains when they're required.

Happy Holidays!

In Washington you won't be ticketed if you don't have chains when they are required, they just make you turn around. The State Patrol will be checking each vehicle that wants to proceed.

I carry a set of cables that will fit the outside duals to stay legal in most locations that require chains. I don't really expect to use them. If the 4 wheel drive isn't sufficient to get through I will probably park it and wait for better conditions although if I get stuck, I would try them to get moving again.

I will have to see if I can fit chains on my new coach when I get it. It will be four wheel drive but I too will park if I can but I have run ahead of storms before leaving Montana and trying to get down in elevation so I would not be caught in the ice and snow. I have had worse luck not in the west but in West VA actually. Lots of snow in the cumberland gap that is unreported when you are driving and it was March even.

Looks like that truck lost air and the chp gave him an escort to a safe stopping area.

Our local city and schools use Onspot chains. They say they are a mixed bag both for workability and costs - but they are certainly unique.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLJPz5BseQI
