Alabama license renewal

Post by gwb36 »

We are planning to move our residence to Alabama. Can anybody who lives in Alabama provide how much it costs to renew license plates yearly on their Born Free? We have most other expenses tied down but can not find a good source to answer this question.

Alabama License Renewal

Post by Dallas Baillio »

In February, 2008 I paid $345.50 to license my 2001 RSB Born Free.

Breakdown is as follows:

License Fee $50.00
State Tax 35.75
County Tax 88.00
City Tax 27.50
School Tax 118.25
Hospital Tax 19.25
Health Department Tax 5.50
Issue Fee (To obtain by Mail) 1.25

Total Fees and Taxes $345.50

The above is taken from my itemized receipt.

Last year I paid $401.14. I think I paid around $600 in February of 2003 after I purchased my 2001 BF the previous December for $63,000.00.

I also recall that my vehicle is classifed as a Class 2 with a license fee of $50.00 which I think is for a vehicle under 12,000 lbs. The License Commissioner established this rating. At the time I did not recall the exact weight so I probably got a break of $50.00 per Sam Ryan's post above.

So Mr. Becker, since your vehicle is two years newer than mine and I evidently got a $50 break on my base classification, which you probably will not receive, I would estimate your registration to be around $500 the first year. However all the taxes on my vehicle, except state, are county of residency dependent so you could pay more or less depending upon in which county you register your BF.

It would be interesting to see what license fees are in other states. How about some of you reading this post letting us all know what you pay yearly to license your vehicle??

That sounds like a good idea. I will try to dig up our last tax bill for our BFT in South Carolina.

In Iowa, my 2002 Born Free 26' RSB coach had an initial yearly registration fee of $110.00. The fee was the same thru year 2006. The fee then dropped to $80.00 for years 2007 and 2008.

So yearly registration fees for Class C motorhomes in Iowa are fairly reasonable.

Registration fee in NJ was $71.50 this year. That's it, no other fee involved.

Vehicle Taxes

Post by bill crommett »

I found our South Carolina tax bill for our 2004 BFT. The tax bill for the year 2007 was $596.68, and this all county tax and does not include license renewal because that is a state levy and is on a two year basis and I don't find the records for that. About $300.00 of the total was for School and Tech. college, but South Carolina is still way below national average for education. But the legislature is so proud that we now are a better state than Mississippi, academically .

Here in New York the fee is based on weight not value. My 1990 26' RSB costs $57.50 a year, along with a $15.00 safety inspection. But be assured they (New York) make up the difference many other places making us the second hightest taxed state of the union.

Here is a summary to date:

Alabama $345.50
Iowa 80.00
New Jersey 71.50
California (2) 310.00
168.00
Texas 102.50
New York 57.50
South Carolina 596.68 + ?

Sadly, it looks like two poor southern states top the list. Here in Alabama we also have a 9 percent sales tax (state, county, city) even on food. In Mobile 10 percent on fast food to help pay off a convention center.

Sam.....Here is an update to registering in South Dakota. The initial Motor Vehicle Tax is at 3% and that was on the coach sale price minus my trade-in allowance. And now my yearly registration and tags are $137.00 .

I think the weight was on the original title as 11200 thus no scale weight needed and that 11200 now shows on my title and vehicle registration.

And quite a few of South Dakota plated RV's that you see aren't SD residents. Some SD Mail Forwarding Services will do the registering for you and mail you the SD plates.

I think I was not clear regarding my sales tax remarks. I was only bemoaning the fact that locally we have a 9 percent sales tax which is a regressive tax. The sales tax on the purchase of a vehicle is currently 3.75 in Baldwin County (across Mobile Bay) or 4.00 percent ( I think) in Mobile County where I live. I say I think because as I recall the rate, then 4.5 percent, was adjusted downward to help local auto dealerships compete with the 3.75 percent rate. I cannot find the records for the tax I paid on my 2001 BF. I think they are with my tax records in my safe deposit box. It was either 4.0 or 4.5 Percent.
