On the Generac, there is a little fuel primer switch located on the control panel behind the panel access door. According to the Owner's Manual:

"Before starting a cold engine (if it has not been
started in more than two weeks), press this switch
for approximately 10 to 15 seconds to bring fuel
from the tank to the carburetor. This rocker type
switch springs back into its original position when
released."

I have an Onan on the BFT. All you do to prime it is to push in on the "stop" side of the "start/stop" switch. The length of time to hold it in depends on how long it's been since you've run it. As with any thing like this, it can be flooded so use some judgement.
