Enhancing the jackknife sofa so it approximates a double bed

Post by bobandbonnie »

We built a small, inexpensive "shelf" that, when placed beside the jackknife sofa bed at night makes for a full-width double bed. The "shelf" stores in the overhead bunk during the day along with a folded-up foam rubber mattress that makes the sofa/bed a lot more comfortable at night for two sleepers.

We love almost everything about our 26' rear bath rig except that the sofa bed was just a little too narrow for both of us to comfortably sleep, and the overhead bunk is not a great place to get in and out of for a senior citizen who needs to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom! This new device is essentially a padded 2x6 or even 1x6 with three legs that fits snugly between the extended sofa bed and the opposite chairs. Will email pictures at various stages of construction to anyone interested. It's greatly changed our experience for the better. Contact us at bbgregson88@gmail.com

Bob & Bonnie,

I would encourage you to post your Flexsteel jack knife sofa modification in the Coach Modifications section on this forum.

You read my mind. After the first outing we decided to do the same modification. By turning the chairs so they're parallel to the wall you gain 1 foot which can really make a huge difference. Please post pictures of what you did because I was going to do this soon. I like sleeping in the loft, but not always.
