Break noise

Post by CuJo's Pride »

Hi all

The breaks on our 26 ' RB make a whistling (of varying pitches). Any one experience that and is it an indication of something? It's coming from the front breaks.

Thanks

Sounds like the pads on your front disc brakes may be worn out and wearing against your rotors. If this is the case, best to get the pads checked, and replaced if needed, ASAP before you damage the rotors (which significantly increases the cost of a brake job).

The weird thing is Curt can control the whistle depending on how hard he break. Our cars have never done this before. Maybe coaches are different..

Does it make the noise when the brakes are applied or when you are just driving?

Disc brakes at one time had little tabs that would whistle when the pads wore down to a certain point. Kind of an early warning system. But it stopped when the brakes were applied.

I don't know if they still make them that way or not.

Whistles at a very low speed when brakes are applied.

Brakes are designed to make noise when the pads are worn down and need replacing. So the noise you hear is the brakes telling you to have them serviced now. If you wait too long, the rotors will be worn to the point they have to be replaced, not just machined.

Perhaps you have a small rock, pebble stuck somewhere.
Try to pound with a hammer around the brake assembly.
Also try to spray brake cleaner.
